What Would John Jay Do?

What would John Jay do in the competitive 21^st Century’s global marketplace?  President John Jay understood the value of real estate in establishing competitive markets that benefited his fellow citizens and U.S. trading partners. Peace Commissioner Jay, against the orders of his government, eliminated the French from participating in the Treaty of Paris negotiations to protect the United States’ claim to the Northwest Territory and North American trade route navigation.  Foreign Secretary Jay ignored the directives of his government to acquiesce Mississippi River navigation rights to Spain thus laying the foundation to acquire both the Louisiana and West Florida Territories acquisitions in 1803.  Chief Justice and Minister Plenipotentiary to Great Britain Jay averted a second 18^th Century war with Great Britain by negotiating a 1794 Treaty insuring peaceful international trade while protecting the vast western holdings of the United States during the French Revolutionary Wars.   Jay, like Thomas Jefferson and Richard Henry Lee, believed that the peaceful and lawful acquisition of territory and trading routes for the United States was the Keystone to national wealth and prosperity.

The Global Market and John Jay

   In this age of global markets and economics the United States is both the world’s economic and military superpower.  In this fortuitous time of plenty, our leaders should heed the examples of John Jay (Northwest Territory), Thomas Jefferson (Louisiana Purchase), James Monroe (Florida Purchase), James K. Polk (Oregon Territory and the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo) and William H. Seward (Alaska), who simply wanted to BUY LAND for the United States of America. 

Jay would see the securing of southern United States borders (2000 miles) as a much simpler task if the Mexican Baja Peninsula and northern Mexican States were annexed (1000 mile border) by the United States.  Greenland could become Obama’s Ice Box or McCain’s Folly with some Presidential vision and a Congressional checkbook.  

Furthermore, to compete effectively in the world’s trade markets John Jay, especially after learning of the success the British had in Hong Kong, would readily endorse acquiring or leasing strategically located real estate parcels on the other continents.  Fee simple acquisition or long term leases of “City-Territories” within emerging nations and markets would be a “no brainer” Act of Congress for Jay. Synergizing entrepreneurship to effectively compete in the global economy by peacefully acquiring new territory for the United States would be a strategic plan in a 2009 John Jay Presidential Administration.
